What is a Facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to remove wrinkles and to decrease the signs of aging. During a facelift, excess fat and skin are removed, and the surrounding muscles are tightened. The goal is to improve the contours and appearance of the face, making the patient look younger. Facelift surgery is a serious medical procedure, but the results can yield a more satisfying appearance for patients who understand the procedure and deem it worthwhile.
What are Realistic Expectations?
Skin type and patient age influence the final results. Skin will continue to age after the procedure. Patients should also realize that some scarring is unavoidable following a facelift, although Dr. Lee strives to make it as inconspicuous as possible. Patients should also understand and be prepared for the healing process, which will continue for several weeks beyond surgery. During that time, pain medication is usually required, and physical and social activity may be limited.
In some cases, an additional treatment may be advisable to augment or complement the effects of the facelift. Cosmetic procedures commonly combined with facelift surgery include facial implants, chemical peels, lip augmentation, laser skin resurfacing, and eyelid rejuvenation surgery.
What are the Benefits of a Facelift?
Facelift surgery can create a younger appearance and improve self-esteem. By removing excess skin, the procedure can result in significant wrinkle reduction. The effects of sun and wind damage can be diminished through facelift surgery, as well. Facelift surgery does not change skin texture and every wrinkle cannot be erased. Another cosmetic treatment may be necessary to achieve additional goals. Also, the aging process will continue after the surgery, meaning that even long-lasting results are not permanent.
