Plastic Surgery Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure Dr John Lee performs to change the size and shape of a woman’s breast for a number of reasons:
- To enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons feels her breast size is too small.
- To correct a reduction of breast volume after pregnancy.
- To balance a difference in breast size.
- As a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.
By inserting an implant behind each breast, Dr Lee is able to increase a woman’s bust line by one or more bra cup sizes.
The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you are physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate. Usually this procedure is performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation in our fully accredited onsite surgical suite.
Breast augmentation does not correct severely drooping breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted, Dr Lee may recommend a breast lift . Breast lifting can often be done at the same time as your breast augmentation.
What happens during Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Step 1 - Anesthesia
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Dr Lee prefers to use intravenous sedation (also known as twilight anesthesia) during breast augmentation surgery.
Step 2 - The incision
Dr Lee makes the incision in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. The most popular incisions are inframammary incision (in the crease line under the breast) and the periareolar Incision (around the nipple). Dr Lee will discuss incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome.
Step 3 - Implant Choice
Breast size and shape are very important decisions to be made prior to your surgery. Breast Implant type and size will be determined not just on your desired increase in size but more importantly on your breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type. Dr Lee and his nurse will be sure to go over all your options and give you plenty of opportunity to try on different types and sizes of implant so you are confident in your decison.
Step 4 - Inserting and placing the implant
After the incision is made Dr Lee will insert the breast implant into a pocket that he has made. Dr Lee's preference for a more natural look is to place the implant under the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement).
Step 5 - Closing the incisions
Dr Lee will close the Incisions with layered sutures in the breast tissue and uses sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape to close the skin.
Different Types of Breast Implants
Saline Implants
Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. They can be filled with varying amounts of solution which can affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast. Should the implant leak, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Saline implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women over the age of 18 years.
Silicone Implants
Dr Lee uses Natrelle Silicone Gel implants. They are made from a soft, safe, cohesive silicone. The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not collapse. Silicone gel filled breast implants have been used for 25 years in more than 60 countries. Today's silicone gel implants are approved by the FDA and are among the most studied medical devices.
